Laza ( Music Band )1979-1984

Hi, I have been in a good few Bands in my time, One that I wish to remember is a band called  LAZA

I joined the band after John the drummer approached me while I was playing in another band that I wanted to leave anyway ! He asked me if I was happy in the band and I answerd No, He then said, Would I like to join their band, So I went for an Audition and was with them for 5 years , The band played all kinds of pop music from old to charts,

In the picture above, The guitarist on the far left is Paul Newson who was standing in for our guitarist ( Robin) Next to him is Peter Sugden , He is the nephew of the late Molly Sugden, Standing behind the Drummer is a girl singer ( Debbie ) The Drummer is a man called Johnny Geen, Then there is me on the end, Yes I had long permed hair & glasses etc, Don't people change !

The story of off shore pirate radio in the 1960s

The story of off shore Pirate Radio in the 1960s

Hi, I was born in 1949 , And in my young life , I can remember when the Pirate radio stations filled the airwaves with great new music, Stations like Radio Caroline and Radio London , Radio City, Radio 390, and then came RADIO SUTCH and it is now on the internet keeping the memory of  Mr Screaming Lord Sutch & the Savages Who recorded with the Great late Joe Meek at 304 Holloway Road London N7.

Now the Radio station is not a pirate anymore as internet technology has overtaken the crude transmitters that was used in the 1960s, Radio Sutch was relaunched in 2012 as what it is today a 24/7 setup that has a great selection of shows including Tales from the Woods & of course The Joe Meek hour just to mention a few, I must admit that I listen to it nearly every week on Monday night 9pm.

So here is some more info about Pirate Radio for you to read, Have a great time reading this.....

In 1964, following the launch of Radio Caroline, Screaming Lord Sutch said he would start his own station. On 27 May Radio Sutch began broadcasting on 194 metres (announced as 197), 1542 kHz, from the south tower of Shivering Sands. It was a low-powered, low-budget operation. The transmitter, from a Handley Page Halifax bomber, was powered with a cascade of car batteries, a scaffold pole with a skull-and-crossbones flag as an antenna. By September 1964 Sutch had become tired of it and sold it to his manager Reginald Calvert for a reported £5,000. Calvert bought new equipment and expanded the station into other towers. One of the original seven towers had been destroyed when a ship collided with it, leaving the northernmost tower isolated. The remaining five were connected by catwalks in an irregular star shape. Calvert's team repaired the catwalks and refurbished the facilities and living quarters. New studios were built, a more powerful transmitter installed, and the station experimented with new antenna configurations and frequencies (1034 and eventually 1003 kHz). Initially antenna wires were strung around the periphery of the towers. This was unsuccessful due to poor insulation. Later a vertical mast was erected on the central tower, supported by guy wires on three of the surrounding towers, and the station adopted the nickname "your tower of power". Although output never exceeded 2kW, the efficiency of the antenna combined with its location over water (a reflector of radio waves) gave it the coverage of a more powerful land-based station, and Radio City claimed a power of 10kW for the purpose of attracting advertisers.

The studio equipment was standard albeit low-budget, comprising a pair (later three) of Garrardturntables, an AKG D12 microphone (the same model used by both Radio Caroline ships, Radio Londonand Radio 270), domestic tape decks and a basic custom mixer. A US navy transmitter General ElectricTCJ-7 (nicknamed "Big Bertha") replaced the bomber transmitter, instead of the makeshift scaffolding pole antenna, a real antenna mast was used. Most stations played jingles and commercials from cartridges but City used reel-to-reel. In addition to the usual music programmes, subsidised by Dutch and American evangelical shows, City had the only comedy show on pirate radio - The Auntie Mabel Hour, recordings of DJs acting comic sketches and parodying parodies contemporary songs. Some material seems to have been stolen from The Goon Show and Round the Horne. At Christmas 1966 the show featured a parody of Alice in Wonderland and included the DJs singing new comic lyrics to instrumental versions of popular songs.
Another novelty was The Anti-City Show, which invited listeners to send letters and reel-to-reel tapes of complaint about the station. It became a forum for complaints about anything that annoyed. Occasionally, "You've Got Your Troubles" by The Fortunes was broadcast as a signal to land-based associates of a problem, such as a supply shortage.
The Port of London authority had placed wind and tide gauges on the isolated north tower and complained that City's signal interfered with their radio link to the mainland, potentially placing shipping at risk. Interference with official communications was a commonly cited reason for pirates to be banned but Radio City was to provide a more compelling reason for their closure.

In September 1965, merger talks began between City and Radio Caroline South. A transmitter was delivered to the fort, intended to be used by Caroline when it left its ship. The merger collapsed, and the transmitter was never paid for. Calvert then talked to Radio London about a merger, in a venture called UKGM (United Kingdom Good Music).
In the early morning of 20 June 1966, a business associate of Calvert, retired Major Oliver Smedley (who claimed ownership of the transmitter), sent men to take possession of Shivering Sands. That evening, Calvert visited Smedley's home and in a scuffle was shot by Smedley. Smedley was charged with murder but cleared on grounds of self-defence.
The killing spurred the Government to shut offshore stations, passing the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act. However prior to this legislation, it was established that the fort, within British waters, was covered by existing legislation. On 8 February 1967, at midnight the station closed.

The 1975 rock music film Slade in Flame, starring Slade, includes a scene in which the fictional rock band Flame visit Radio City for an interview, only to be airlifted to safety when shots are fired at the fort from a ship. It is later implied that the attack was staged by the band's unscrupulous manager to drum up publicity. The fictional attack was inspired by the actual 1966 boarding party; some news footage of the boarding is seen on a fictional television news report.
Exterior shots of the visit were filmed on and around Shivering Sands, with actor/musicians climbing the ladders used by Radio City DJs. For the airlift a helicopter landed on the roof of one towers. It was not big enough to carry all the actors, so they had to enter on one side of the aircraft and exit out of shot on the other. The film crew hung a Radio City banner on one towers, bigger and more professionally made than the crudely painted sign used by the station.
In one respect the film was not authentic: the fort has no antenna. The original Radio City mast had been dismantled in 1967. It was not possible to build a replica because of its size, and special effects techniques were not up to replicating it. Interior scenes were filmed on a stage. The interior dimensions of the tower are authentic, but the studio appears more professionally equipped. In particular, the fictional studio contains cartridge machines which Radio City never used. The Radio City DJ was played by Tommy Vance, who was on Radio Caroline in the 1960s.
In real life interviews on pirate stations would have been taped on land rather than exposing musicians to hazardous and expensive sea crossings.
An episode of Patrick McGoohan's "Danger Man" (known in the U.S. as "Secret Agent Man"), "The Not-So-Jolly Roger", was filmed on Red Sands Fort in early 1966 when "Radio 390" was broadcasting (shut down a year later). The episode was broadcast on 4 July that year.

Radio Sutch was revived in 2012 as an internet radio station, in memory of Screaming Lord Sutch. Pirate Radio was to start a number of careers for DJs like Tony Blackburn, The late Kenny Everett , DLT, Ed Stewart just to mention a few, So thank you Pirate radio for such a history of Musical Talent ! As I write this I am actually listening to The Joe Meek Hour ( What a great show ).

Is our chart music going down the pan ?

Well, I don't know if it is me getting old, But our pop charts have never been so bad, There are just a few reasonable songs, But the rest are Rap (perhaps I should put a C in front of that) , and the rest are so called R & B  , Now original R & B is stuff like what Chuck Berry , Muddy Waters, to name a few, But this new kind of R & B is just rubbish,

Maybe Bands like Queen and Led Zeppelin are not appreciated  anymore which is a great shame, All I know as a musician, I don't like the new crap that is being released, Having said that , Artist's like Rod Stewart  and Madonna and Sir Cliff Richard are still making good records, But the clowns on BBC Radio 1 will not play them because of the artist's age, As nan would say, "What a f****ing liberty  , After all the great years of music they have given us !

Now, I don't mean to moan, But come on you song writers , Give us a break , Stop writing Rap Crap and silly repetitive tunes that drive us up the wall !

Why is Radio 1 so against older Musicians ?

Hi folks, Why is it that Radio 1 will not play older musicians etc on their
shows ? . I think it is an outrage and an insult to the music industry,

                                    Radio 1 studio

It is so upsetting that great singers who have got new music out like
Tom Jones , Rod Stewart, Madonna, Kylie Minogue just to name a few, Are not being played by Radio 1 just because of their age, Come on Radio 1 people, Grow up or shut up , But play this great music , If you can play some of the crap that is in the charts today, Then be fair and do us all a favour, Play some decent music like you used to in the early days !

Band update ( SIMPLY RETRO )

Hi, Well it is time for an update on our Band  SIMPLY RETRO,  As you may have read that our Rhythm guitarist/ Singer Steve Kerr has left the Band, Well after trying hard to get a replacement, I came up with an idea,
Why not record rhythm on to a mini disc and sync it with our timing !
Well I have managed to record 3 backing guitar trax , Apache ( The Shadows ) FBI ( The Shadows) &
Sultans of swing ( Dire Straits ) ,
We will be trying them out on Sunday at our studio rehearsal so wish us luck,
We are still looking for a fourth person for our band, But in the meantime, Backing disc will have to fill in .

We have now added 50s music to our song list.

Pubs closing down is a Disgrace !

I am so bloody annoyed  with the fact that public houses keep closing down , Not only that, They end up as McDonald's or even worse a place of worship, Now I am not against a church being built but not in our pubs that are our English heritage , Just this week , Another pub became a McDonald's  , The latest victim is The Ship pub on Plumstead Common road,

This is an example of how to ruin a good pub, another one that I saw last year is  the Mildmay Tavern where the Honeycombs used to play in th60s It is now a convenience store , How sad it is to see !
So why are these pubs closing ?
Well if supermarkets were not able to sell drink (Alcohol) And corner shops only sold News papers and confectionery, Then perhaps our poor old pubs would be ok !  THINK ABOUT IT !

Upcycling an old garden planter

Good day to you all, Today I am going to blog about up cycling items that would normally go to the rubbish tip,
Just recently, I picked up an old planter that a kind person gave to me from freecycle, After getting it home & placing it in my garden, I was wondering what I could do to make it in to a nice garden feature, After a long think, I came up with an idea,

On the roof of my shed was an old dilapidated ladder that was too dangerous to use anymore, I took the ladder and separated the 2 sections,
The wider ladder was the worst of the 2 so it needed to be sorted out so I measured the ladder and fond the middle, I then sawed the ladder in half,

I then gently hammered the 2 separate halves in to each end of the planter, I then took the remaining ladder and placed it on the top across the upright halves of the first ladder, After measuring it to the required length, I cut off the bit that I did not want, I then secured all parts with screws to anchor it in position, By this time I was given an old pine Bed frame and headboards one of which had a broken leg, I sawed off the remains of the legs then placing the headboard behind the ladders on the planter, I screwed them in to place,

I then was given some old trellis which I placed  inside the back of the ladders ,

By now this was starting to look good, So now it was time to paint the planter with some masonry paint that my Son-in-law gave me. So I did just that, The result is great!

And now it is all painted up, All I have got to do is fit a shelf along the front and sides, Then a skirt all round the bottom to hide what is underneath the planter .

So That is how to upcycle an old planter, Stay cool and happy planting!

Are Child pageants good for your child ?

Hi, I am going to talk to you about a TV program on TLC that keeps appearing on my TV on a Saturday, It is called Toddlers and Tiaras , It features Children mostly girls some of them as young as 3 years old being made to show off in a pageant , Now I am not a kill joy, I am just concerned that these children are not being allowed to have a proper childhood,

They are Blinged up to the nines in fake tan and make up , Now I am from the old school type family that think children should be let to grow up in their own time, I think it is wrong to put them through this kind of competition at such young ages, Come on parents, Let your kids have a childhood ! Or am I missing the point ?   And just this evening, I saw a TV program about w folk on benefits in England spending their benefits on pageants, I think it is out of order and it makes it bad for people who are struggling to live on such benefits , Why on Earth did they bring this to our country, Let our kids be kids !
